PREAMBLE:  l thank God Almighty, who allowed this event to come up. It is my pleasure to welcome all our fresh students to the orientation lecture towards the 8th Matriculation programme. l hereby wish to talk to you on guidance and counseling services in tertiary institution.

Let me just make a brief definition of the term Guidance and Counseling (G & C)

G & C services can be defined as a group of services to individuals to assist them in securing knowledge and skills needed in making plans and services and in interpreting life. Therefore, G & C services are designed to help students to recognize, accept and develop their potential, adjust to school and develop the skill they need to cope with the problems they meet.

Therefore, these are the services under Guidance and Counseling: Orientation service, Information service, Placement service, Appraisal service, Counseling service, Follow-up service and Referral service.

  1. ORIENTATION SERVICE: The orientation services consist of activities provided to the students in helping them to adjust to school environment and experiences.
  2. IN FORMATION SERVICE: This service is categorized into three, educational information, vocational information and personal-social information. E. g. Counseling case file form.
  3. PLACEMENT SERVICE: It helps students to choose the right situations. E. g. Subject combination, higher education and employment.
  4. APPRAISAL SERVICE: Designed to collect, analyse and use data about each student for the purpose of better understanding as well as assisting them to understand themselves.
  5. COUNSELING SERVICE: It is also designed to facilitate self—understanding and self-development through dyadic or group relationships. E.g. To know your worth, real self, personality and dignity. This will enhance you to have good relationships with others.
  6. FOLLOW-UP SERVICE: It consists of activities involving visit to places such as other institutions and employment, establishment, collection of data, conducting research, keeping up with past students to monitor how productive they have been in their various areas of work and other human endeavor, such that successful students among them can be cited as role models for the present crop of students. It can also be used to obtain information about truants and, dropouts. Follow-up visits are made to obtain information about other opportunities and services for referral when problem is beyond the scope of services available within the school guidance and counseling programme.
  7. REFERRAL: Students on probation, exam malpractice can be referred to receive counseling services and referral of students to professionals and agencies can be done whenever the need arises, when we ascertain that students in such cases would be able to benefit from the best available "intervention. E.g. Clinical cases.

HOW CAN STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM THESE SERVICES?

New students are given Counseling case file form to fill the following data for counseling services:

  1. Personal data
  2. Family data

It will give insight to the counselor about the student’s personal social life such as dressing, morality and their interpersonal relationship in general.

Educational data

  1. Primary school
  2. Secondary school

Other schools

Year of admission

Year of graduation

Certificate awarded

It will aid the counselor to help the students to discover their interests, abilities, capacities, self-concepts and skill study habits.

Special data

1. List major Happy events experienced since birth.

Happy events can be referred to as pleasant emotions as joy, happiness delight, pleasure, affection and healthy living.

2. List major sad events experienced since birth.

These are unpleasant emotions like anger, aggression, fear, anxiety and jealousy which can lead to cultism, disturbances, riots. etc.

If pleasant emotions is more than unpleasant emotions from the information collected from these events, invariably such students will have satisfactory feelings, deal with their colleagues with love affection. They will see life as worth living but if otherwise; such students would be exposed to frustration, pain and conflicts.

Therefore, it is the duty of the counselor to make those students to see that life can still be worth living with happiness and peace through counseling services.

What are your major life ambitions?

Career and marital counseling will assist the students to achieve their life ambitions.

EFFECTIVE STUDY HABIT

Students can make their studies interesting and enjoyable if it is effectively planned and carried out accordingly. There are some clues to effective study habit.

  1. Dram out a time table, to include all your courses to cover each day of the week. Before planning, put into consideration your daily activities, i.e. your daily routine.
  2. You have to select a conducive place that is cool, quiet and a very neat environment, not a noisy place.
  3. Choose appropriate materials for your study, a comfortable chair and table. Do not deceive yourself by lying on your bed or a bench. Do not read with candle or dim lantern so as not to strain out eyes.
  4. Keep off from any form of distractions for effective assimilations. E. g. Radio, cassette players and television because your concentration could easily be distracted by them.
  5. Do not read aloud but silent reading in order not to disturb other people.
  6. Make sure you develop interest in the subject you are studying at a particular time and try to read deep into it.
  7. Always be with your writing materials like jotters, biro, pencil and a dictionary. Jot down the important points, check difficult words as this will help you a lot.
  8. Go over your written work or assignment to see whether there is any mistake.
  9. Form the habit of group discussion with other serious and brilliant students.
  10. When you discover any problem, note that particular aspect and ask the course lecturer the following day.
  11. Make sure you eat regularly (balanced diet). Attempt regular exercises and do not force yourself to study when feel sleepy.
  12. Do not use any drug to read as this may lead to mental disorder, e.g. Coffee or any stimulants.

DECISION ON DRESS CODE FOR STUDENTS

Management considered the proposals sent in by representative and approved these weekly dress code in one of its meeting.

  1. Monday and Tuesday: All students shall be corporately dressed (simple and neat).
  2. Wednesday: All students shall put on jeans trousers/ skirts over decent sport shirt or Tee shirt as the case may be. Low-waist jeans, crazy, rugged and mad jeans are not allowed and those that reveal the contours of the body are also not acceptable and no any form of sagging.
  3. Thursday: All students shall put on decent English attire.
  4. Friday: All students shall put on decent natives attires. i.e. Buba and sokoto etc. for men and Ankara or lace native attires for ladies.

Please promote excellence for our great institution through your character and dressing. lgbajo Polyetchnic does not want to produce irresponsible students and will punish any offender. We are ready _to_ engage students in research activities. We are not restricting ourselves to certificate alone, but with moral aspect. We are ready to set up a higher moral standard which other institutions in the country will be happy to emulate.

Violators would be sanctioned. Some of the punishments for culprits include:

  1. First time offender: Will be invited to counseling and be strongly warned.
  2. Second time offender: Will appear before the Igbajo Polytechnic Disciplinary Committee and proof of guilt will earn the offender one semester suspension.
  3. Hardened offender: With proof of intransigence will be expelled from the institution.

Finally, guidance and counseling serves the quality assurance and quality control roles in the educational system. It is able to detect defects in the character of students, nib it in the bud, prevent permanent deficiency and produce people with good character in the process. lt also help in the development of skills, attitudes and potentials of Nigerian youths so as to realize their fullest possible capabilities for national development.

By God’s grace, you will all succeed and people will celebrate you.

Thank you and God bless.
